  • Introduction

Qin Shihuang, the first Emperor who unified China, was buried in the centre of the mausoleum when he died in 210 B.C. Surrounding his mausoleum are the renowned pottery figures. The complex structure of Qin Shihuang's Mausoleum was designed and built on the model of Xianyang, which was the capital city during Qin's lifetime. The pottery figures, which are slightly smaller than life-size, come in a variety of appearances. The warriors are widely considered to be masterpieces, and together with the horses, chariots and weapons, demonstrate exceptional historical value. Since the excavation, the Terracotta Warriors have impressed the whole world with their artistic, cultural, and scientific importance. They are considered one of the greatest archaeological discoveries in China and an eighth "Wonder of the World". In 1987, the Qin Shihuang Mausoleum and Terracotta Warriors were listed as World's Cultural Heritage sites by the UNESCO.
